Black Eyed Peas
This was a rush project, I had to create four separate drawings/stencils and apply them onto leather. LEATHER. [Faux leather, so calm down.] It doesn’t matter – faux or real, leather isn’t a fun material to work with. I went ULTRA minimal on the sketches and designs. The application process of the stencil was a little tricky as well because I didn’t want to use a WHOLE bunch of spray adhesive, actually, just barely any at all. It would stain the leather. Long story short, the real art here was the application process, which will never get the credit/press it deserves.
But yea, the BEP loved them, obviously. Here they are holding them proudly. I’m proud of these.
Note how small these stencils are, hand cut using traditional stenciling process. I sketch on normal printing paper and hand cut each with an x-acto knife. My hand is usually out of commission for days following these projects.
This was also a huge honor because in college when BEP consisted of three dudes, sans Fergie, I was obsessed with them. They were true heads and appreciated the art of hip hop – music, breaking and graffiti. Think: Joints & Jams circa 1998
I still have lots of respect for them, including Fergie – what an incredible career they have created for themselves – get yours.
